This project is currently in the design phase. DOT&PF conducted a reevaluation of the original 1993 environmental documents in consultation with the State Historical Preservation Office (SHPO), Chickaloon Village Traditional Council (CVTC), and other local stakeholders. As part of the process, the project team identified a historic coal mining district and other culturally sensitive resources within the project area. To comply with federal and state laws regarding historic properties, a Memorandum of Agreement was executed between DOT&PF, SHPO, and CVTC in 2019, which approved mitigation measures for the historic district and culturally sensitive resources in the project vicinity. Ten additional cultural resources were newly identified during the summer 2020 field season.
Due to recent developments concerning right-of-way acquisition, impacts to cultural resources, and projected availability of funding, DOT&PF has concluded that proceeding with the currently preferred alternative of a new alignment and Moose Creek Bridge may no longer be prudent. DOT&PF is now reevaluating alternatives to improve the highway and replace the existing bridge within the existing right-of-way. The duration of construction activities will be determined as the project progresses.
